the Factors Walk windows

River Street is  along the broad Savannah River. The century old buildings, once cotton warehouses, have been converted to antique shops, distinctive boutiques, spectacular galleries, quaint brew pubs, fabulous restaurants, unique nightspots, elegant inns and hotels.

we visited the section known as the Factors Walk, an original cotton trading area. It was constructed in 1817 and contains several pedestrian bridges that cross over the street below. Taking time to cross the bridges and reflect on the lives of those almost two centuries past, is mesmerizing. These walks have surely been crossed hundreds of thousands of times by many a hard working soul.

  1. That building looks so similar to the old Lancashire cotton mills in England. Many were too big and uneconomical to repurpose and there are very few left in the big cotton towns like Oldham and Rochdale. There are some that are listed for their architectural and historic interest but finding uses to sustain and maintain them is difficult. Many people think they are majestic but I think most are a monstrosity. They were usually built with areas of terraced housing around them and as that older housing is cleared, the mills appear out of scale and incongruous. I suppose in the right area, like along River Street, they provide a great opportunity for leisure activities within a characterful setting.

    1. Paul, I like when well-built old structures are re-used as in this case. I think they are so much more characteristic. It often depends on the location. Thanks for taking time to comment, I appreciate it.

  2. Savannah is one of my favorite places to take photos. I have been there many times but you found windows that I missed. Great photos.
