How to Survive November #5

I have shared photographs from Porvoo many times before, but this visit felt a little different. It was November, and the daylight seemed to vanish in an instant; by the time we were ready to leave, the streets were already slipping into darkness. I will not go into too much detail about the history or sights of Porvoo’s Old Town here, but it truly is a wonderful place to explore. It is a popular destination for visitors, and this time we had a guest from Australia with us, so taking him there felt like the perfect way to show a bit of Finland’s charm.

The first set is taken from across the river, looking back into town toward Old Porvoo with its famous landmarks: Porvoo Cathedral rising on the hill and the iconic red shore houses lining the riverbank, softly reflected in the water. The winter light around 2:30 PM casts long shadows and a gentle glow on the historic wooden buildings, highlighting the peaceful atmosphere and timeless character of this riverside view.

We came to the town, the cobblestone streets, and colorful houses, the decorations to the holiday season has begun, but it was fully on and I appreciated that. I did take several photos of the doors and windows. It was 3:15 PM, and there was still enough light to stroll at an unhurried pace, taking in the details, and even some of the little shops were still open despite it being Sunday, their warm interiors spilling light onto the street, inviting passersby to step inside.

This set of photos was taken during an early dinner, when the streets were beginning to empty. Around 4:30 PM the daylight started to fade, softening the edges and shining light across the pavement. The shopfronts glowed with a gentle yellow light that spilled onto the sidewalks, casting a warm contrast against the cool evening air. Most of the stores were closing for the day, their doors shut, and there were only a few people passing by, leaving the streets empty, calm and quiet.

I am also posting this as part of Dans Thursday Doors.

  1. These are wonderful photos. I am impressed by how the colors stand out in the soft light, and I love the reflections.

I was fully prepared to say that it would be impossible to pick a favorite, but then I saw the corner door on that lovely shop. That’s a great photo. I love the light inside the shop.

The other thing I really like is the vast expanse of cobblestone in the some of the street views. It adds a wonderful texture.
