It is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.

The Bald Eagle is an opportunistic feeder which subsists mainly on fish, which it swoops down and snatches from the water with its talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species,  Sexual maturity is attained at the age of four to five years.

Bald Eagles are not actually bald; the name derives from an older meaning of “white-headed”. The adult is mainly brown with a white head and tail. The sexes are identical in plumage, but females are larger than males. The beak is large and hooked. The plumage of the immature is brown.

Which path should I follow…

Forest

Finland is Europe’s most heavily-forested country. Forests cover 23 million hectares or 74.2% of the land area.

forest

There are about twenty indigenous tree species growing in Finland, the most common ones being pine (Pinus silvestris), spruce (Picea abies) and birch (Betula pendula and B. pubescens). Usually two or three tree species dominate a forest. Naturally pure pine stands are found in rocky terrain, on top of arid eskers and on pine swamps. Natural spruce stands are found on richer soil. Birch is commonly found as an admixture, but it can occasionally form pure birch stands

Birch

About half of the forest land area consists of mixed stands. Rarer species are found mostly as solitary trees. The south-western corner and the south coast of Finland are touched by a narrow zone growing oak, maple, ash and elm.

Spring in Kirkkonummi

tina´s wordless wednesday # 85

Spring has finally arrived to us here in Kirkkonummi, Finland. Yesterday  in the garden, I saw the crocuses were in bloom and  spotted the first wood anemone’s  in the forest.

The catkins were still in going strong – and there was still some ice in the ditch by the road.

Mountains

We do not have mountains in Finland, more like arctic hills. So mypictures of  mountains have been shot in Sri Lanka near the tea country – in Kegalle.

Lets Be Wild – Spring!

I’m participating in the online adventure travel and photography magazine LetsBeWild.com’s Wild Weekly Photo Challenge for bloggersThis week’s Challenge is: Spring!

These are the colors of spring… yellow, green and white. Impatiently waiting for them.

This morning the temperature was -21C, so no spring for us yet.

The first signs are  dandelions popping up, the new light green of  the grass and the whiteness of cow parsley growing by the sidewalks

Nature – Black and White

This week’s Challenge is: Black and White!

I find that when photographing nature in  black and white has to have good shadows and light all in balance, also I find that  graphic shapes come out looking best. Tree trunks, roads, flowers with graphic shape…here are some of my shots.

You can find beauty in a day full of hazy fog…if you look for it.

The sun was already going down and it was around 2 pm, in the first photos, and 4 pm in the last 4 photos.

Nature’s ART

This old oak tree had its bark peeled of, and beneath it this piece of  Nature’s art  was found . This great pattern was engraved there in by the larvae s.

Tämä vanha tammi puu on kuorittiin sen  kaarnasta, alta löytyi tämä luonnon tekemä taideteos.  Toukat olivat kaivertaneet sinne tämän hienon kuvion.
